The Joint Fire Training Academy (JFTA) is a regional partnership that prepares newly hired firefighter-paramedics for safe, effective service while strengthening operational consistency among neighboring departments. Conducted at Wauwatosa and West Allis Fire training facilities, the intensive six-week academy combines classroom instruction, practical skill development, realistic scenario-based exercises, and disciplined team training. Veteran instructors from the participating agencies work together to establish common expectations for safety, communication, decision-making, physical readiness, and professional conduct before recruits are assigned to regular operational duty.

A Comprehensive Recruit Program

The academy’s curriculum is designed to translate foundational certifications into dependable fireground performance. Recruits develop and demonstrate proficiency in structural firefighting, hose and ladder operations, search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, firefighter survival, rapid intervention, emergency medical response, hazardous-materials operations, apparatus and equipment use, incident communications, and crew-based problem solving. Live-fire evolutions and other high-stress simulations allow recruits to apply these skills under controlled conditions while instructors reinforce sound risk management, accountability, teamwork, and consistent regional operating practices.

Participating Partners

The Joint Fire Training Academy brings together recruits and instructors from the Wauwatosa Fire Department, West Allis Fire Department, North Shore Fire/Rescue, and St. Francis Fire Department. Hales Corners also supports the regional training model through an intergovernmental agreement with Wauwatosa for fire, rescue, and emergency medical training facilities and services connected to the academy. The partnership allows agencies to share instructors, facilities, equipment, and specialized expertise while developing firefighters who can operate together from the beginning of their careers.

The academy also serves as an important regional training resource beyond initial recruit instruction. Milwaukee Fire Department personnel and other Shared Services partners train alongside neighboring agencies at the Wauwatosa facility, including live-fire exercises focused on rescuing downed or trapped firefighters. This continuing collaboration builds common terminology, compatible tactics, trusted working relationships, and the operational familiarity required for MMFR and its partners to function as a coordinated, borderless emergency response system.
